Foundation Pottery Classes

Experience with clay
Summary
Discover the joy of working with clay in our welcoming Foundation Pottery Classes at our Belgravia studio. Over five sessions, you’ll build on your previous introduction to wheel throwing, guided by our experienced tutors. Learn essential techniques and gain a solid foundation to grow and develop as a confident potter.
Throughout the course, you’ll practice throwing a range of forms while strengthening your centring, turning and glazing skills. Students focus on mastering the cylinder as the primary form – opening the clay, establishing base thickness, compressing and stretching the base, collaring, and pulling up even walls, with progress checked through wire cross-sectioning.
You’ll also learn to trim on the wheel, remove pots cleanly, turn leather-hard pieces using trimming tools, prepare work for bisque firing, wax bisque ware and glaze using dipping, layering and brush techniques.
We encourage you to stick with the same tutor throughout, but you’ll also gain valuable insights from all our experienced teachers. This course is the perfect prelude to joining our ongoing classes and continuing your pottery journey.
We know busy lives can make regular commitments tricky, even with the best intentions. That’s why our Foundation and ongoing classes run side by side, with teachers supporting each student individually based on where they are in their clay journey – all explained when you arrive.
Please note that we cannot accept complete beginners on the wheel. If you have no experience at the wheel, then please book a taster class or private session.
