A taster afternoon is a great way to get a feel for working with clay on the wheel, a practice that is known as throwing. In these intimate classes (each participant with their own wheel), one of our seasoned tutors will take you through each of the processes that form the basis of throwing.
In this hands-on class, you will learn how to wedge (prepare the clay), centre (secure the clay on the wheel), and, of course, throw (pulling up the walls of the clay into a cylinder). You will throw multiple pots, and you can choose one at the end of the session for the studio to glaze and fire on your behalf. Glaze colour choice at our discretion and you will be contacted when your vessel is ready to collect within 2-4 weeks.
Whether you book for yourself or with a group of friends, this is a wonderfully social and spirited introduction to the joys of throwing.
Please see our terms and conditions for more details. For example we can’t teach pregnant individuals.

We encourage initial one-on-one lessons as the best way for a novice to learn how to throw, and as an excellent way for experienced potters to develop their practice.
These sessions take place in Gregory’s private studio within Studio Pottery London, a quiet space which will help you to keep focus and build confidence.
Glazing and firing of vessels will come at a later stage of your practice.
Please see our terms and conditions for more details. For example we can’t teach pregnant individuals.

These 4 week courses provide a grounding introduction for learning how to throw. Over the space of 4x 1.5 hour sessions, you will learn the five fundaments of this ancient art. Starting with wedging (which is the practice of evenly blending clay and removing air bubbles), you will then learn the essential technique of how to centre the clay on the wheel. Next comes the throwing, where you will learn how to pull up a cylinder. The last two stages are turning (where you trim your pot), and finally firing and glazing.
This introductory course equips you with a sturdy foundation from which to develop as a potter. You are advised to learn with one tutor. It is the perfect prequel to our ongoing classes. If you are a little apprehensive about starting your potting journey, then we heartily recommend our one-to-one tuition as an alternative first step.
